The Terrible Old Man

I found this well done animated adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story The Terrible Old Man. It captures both the nebulous horror Lovecraft’s work often invoked, as well as the pulpish feel of the magazines in which his works first appeared. All in all an excellent, albeit brief, distraction for the fiendish at heart:

The creators uploaded the video months ago and have been promising another, hinting it’ll be an adaptation of From Beyond. Let’s hope they get it finished and uploaded soon.

Lovecraftian Belly Dance

You read that right. A Lovecraft themed belly dance performance. It’s actually quite good and lives up to its name. One could imagine the sinuous gyrations of dancer calling forth the great old ones.

Or perhaps summoning a few hundred dollars in tips.

Either way a fiendishly delightful distraction for the gentlemen out there. And don’t worry about your lady’s reaction. It’s art.

It starts out slow, stick with it.

The Post-Apocalyptic Art of Zdzisław Beksiński

While prowling the tubes looking for some background on the illustrations Gustave Doré did for Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, I serendipitously discovered the grim, post-apocalyptic paintings and drawings of Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński. His pieces range from the hauntingly beautiful to the surreal and disturbing.

Iluminatornia Gnosis has what may be the most extensive online gallery of Beksiński’s work.

Following several years of sadness and tragedy, including the death of his wife and the suicide of his son, Zdzisław Beksiński was stabbed to death by an employee’s teenage son in 2005. The remaining artwork in his estate is represented by the Belvedere Gallery. The Gallery also presents Zdzisław Beksiński’s art on a beautifully rendered official site.

Blogging the Zombie Apocalypse

zombie warning signThe world as we know it has ended and survivors are few and far between. They’re suffering from exposure to the elements and some are running low on food, water, and first aid supplies. The ones who have stuck it out the longest have survivor’s guilt.

But they all have two things in common: they’re trying to survive in a world infested with zombies, and they’re blogging about every detail at LastDaysJournal.com.

Finally, a social networking project I can get behind. It’s sci-fi alternate reality meets survival blog meets MySpace meets RPG in a post-apocalyptic multimedia zombie extravaganza. Here’s the premise:

imagine that the world had been afflicted by a terrible pandemic that killed millions and millions of people in just a few short weeks. now also imagine that those millions of people that were killed by this disease had also gotten back up and started attacking and infecting others as deadly man-eating zombies. now finally imagine that somebody on a tiny, remote island had created a web site for the lucky few who might still have electricity and internet access, and that this site was the sole means for survivors of this terrible tragedy to communicate with and get advice from other human beings in similar situations all around the world.

Survivors who register at the site use text, audio, video, and images to describe their circumstances as they fight off the undead and attempt to maintain some semblance of normalcy.

The warning sign at the top of this post was contributed by Agatha, a survivor in Wisconsin who has found herself fostering several orphaned children who have no one else to protect them. Bruce in New York finally made it out of the subway tunnels and has taken up position in the 42nd Street Library. Check out the stories as they unfold at LastDaysJournal.com.

Via The Zombie Notes Newsgroup, of course.

Coffin Cheesecake

I’ll bet you didn’t think such a thing existed. At least not a tasteful version that was legal to download. But Italian coffin and urn maker Cofanifunebri has been making pin-up style calendars featuring their products photographed along side beautiful Italian models as swag for customers, and they make fiendishly delightful gifts for your friends.

Since I’m a Leo I’ll post Ms. July:

2008 Cofanifunebri coffin cheesecake calendar, Miss July

Cofanifunebri makes a variety of kitschy items sure to warm your cold, coffin loving heart so check them out. This year’s calendar can be found on this page.

They aren’t the only company making coffin cheescake to promote their wares. Coffin Case, a company that makes coffin shaped guitar cases and accessories, has pioneered coffin cheescake and have such well known models as Masumi Max and hardcore icon Jasmin St. Clair modeling pin-up style for them.

Here’s a taste:

Coffin Case has one of the slickest catalogs out there and sell more than just guitar cases. Be sure to visit their MySpace for more macabre madness.
